Contemporary is a more modern form of dance that is expressive and combines several elements from a variety of other dance genres. These elements are influenced by; Jazz, Classical Ballet and Lyrical. Contemporary strives to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. It stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet.
Contemporary dance has a focus on floor work, using gravity to pull dancers down to the floor. It is an overall emotive expression of art that is usually performed barefoot. Students are taught how to show emotion through their body.
